About Us

OUR HISTORY

Maranatha University College, formerly called Maranatha Bible College began through the vision of two men, Mr. William Ofori Atta, a Christian lawyer and statesman, and Rev. John Bergen, a veteran member of the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM now Societies of International Ministries, SIM, Ghana).

While a political prisoner in the 1960s, Mr. Ofori Atta was won to Christ as a result of reading “African Challenge” magazine (an SIM Publication). Mr. Ofori Atta soon developed a burning desire to see a means established whereby Ghanaian young people could be thoroughly trained in the Word of God, for the service of God.

After his release from prison, Mr. Ofori Atta approached Rev. Bergen about his dream, and in 1972 Maranatha Bible College was born as the joint venture of a group of leading Ghanaian believers and the SIM. These same business and professional people were constituted into MBCs (now MUC) first council, and it has operated as an autonomous Ghanaian organization ever since.

One of Maranatha’s most significant ministries since its early days has been the training of leaders for the town fellowship groups that have mushroomed during the same period. Students who studied at MUC at the time were accepted by the churches, and played a key spiritual role in the religious community and the nation.

The chief goal of Maranatha is to serve Christ and His church and equip people from all walks of life to function more effectively in societies and other vocations of life. Since most believers at the time could not attend Bible College full-time because of work, family, and other obligations, MBC now (MUC) majored in making top quality theological education available to part-time students.

MUC pursued accreditation in order to enhance its credibility and to ensure that its graduates had access to the wildest possible spectrum of job opportunities and higher education goals. MUC is an affiliate of ACTEA (Accrediting Council for Theological education in Africa-an arm of the Association of Evangelicals of Africa [AEA], MBC (now MUC) is also a member of the West African Association of Theological Institutions (WAATI). The quality of education offered at Maranatha Bible College was widely respected, and graduates were accepted into higher-level study programmes at the University of Ghana, Central University College, Trinity Theological Seminary in Ghana, ECWA Seminary in Jos, Nigeria, Washington Bible College and Rice Theological Seminary in the USA.

MUC since 2006, was accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and affiliated to the University of Cape Coast. The former Bible College is now the School of Theology and & Ministry. The school of Theology & Ministry is in collaboration with All Nations University. It is our vision and goal that the academic staff and students of Maranatha University College will keep their feet on the ground and their heads below the clouds so as to see among other things the spiritual and physical needs of the communities in which they deploy and apply their acquired knowledge and skills to address these needs
